Tuition

Experience

I have been teaching the drums and piano both privately and in schools
since graduating in 2006 (BA Music Hons, 2:1, University of Bristol).
I hold a CRB/DBS certificate.

I have taught pupils of all ages from 5 to 84, and all abilities from beginner to Grade 8.
I come highly recommended and much of my teaching work is generated through word of mouth.

Location

Drum lessons take place at my home in a soundproofed drum shed with 2 drum kits.
Alternatively, I am happy to travel to your home
(a small fee will be charged to cover travel expenses and time).

Lessons

I teach all styles: Rock, Pop, Funk, Jazz, Latin, etc.
I cover all areas of drumming: rudiments, technique, time-keeping ("beats"),
independence and coordination, fills and licks, reading, chart interpretation,
preparation for Grade examination 1-8, preparation for auditions (e.g. BIMM, The Brit School),
learning the drum parts to songs, transcription, soloing (both snare and full kit).
Whilst I believe in the importance of versatility, reading and technique,
I am happy to tailor lessons to the individual requirements and interests of the pupil.

I am classically trained on piano and can work with pupils on repertoire from beginner to Grade 6 level.
Whilst I do cover music theory, I do not teach Jazz piano or improvisation.
However, I would be happy to recommend an excellent teacher who can.

My lessons are designed to be challenging but fun. I am a friendly, patient and easygoing teacher who aims to provide an environment in which pupils can enjoy learning the drums/piano but also make steady progress. I set weekly homework targets and encourage pupils to practice often, listen to music, and be creative, as well seek out opportunities to perform/play with other musicians. In addition to covering a range of material I also invite pupils to make their own choices about which songs/pieces they would like to study.
